Five leading public libraries select BusinessDecision to enhance service to their business communities

Pasadena, CA — November 11, 2007 — CIVICTechnologies, an award-winning ESRI Business Partner and the leading provider of geographic information system (GIS) data to libraries, today announced that five more public libraries have recently purchased BusinessDecision, a reference database with sophisticated mapping tools and technology that revolutionizes the way small business owners access data critical to their business through their public library.

BusinessDecision provides small business owners with the tools they need to add customers, cross-sell and up-sell existing customers on other products and services, identify the best store locations, evaluate competitors and focus marketing efforts on direct mail and targeted media buys. BusinessDecision provides professional level capabilities that combine state of the art interactive GIS mapping technology with the highest quality consumer market data such as the Tapestry Lifestyle Segmentation system, consumer spending data, demographic and housing data, population estimates and forecasts and Census 2000 data on a web-designed platform.

CIVICTechnologies' President Marc Futterman said public libraries are rapidly recognizing the importance of supporting the economic development of their communities by providing small businesses with the type of market segmentation and consumer household data previously available only to big business. According to Futterman, more than 78% of businesses with employees have fewer than 10 employees. "The impact of small business on the health of the economy is huge," he said.

Futterman pointed to a recently released ground-breaking report from the Urban Libraries Council, Making Cities Stronger, which highlights the need for libraries to play a more direct role in the economic development and sustainability of their communities by supporting the needs of small businesses and entrepreneurs. Small business:
  • Represents 99.7 percent of all employer firms
  • Employs half of all private sector employees
  • Pays more than 45 percent of total U.S. private payroll
  • Has generated 60 to 80 percent of net new jobs annually over the last decade
  • Creates more than 50 percent of non-farm private gross domestic product (GDP)
According to the report, said Futterman, "Small businesses and entrepreneurs see libraries as the trusted intermediary for providing access to data and information for the small business community." BusinessDecision, he said, can truly make an impact in a community by providing business owners with essential information they need to build and grow their businesses.
